Medium Writer Ruins Twitter, Gets 20% Increase in Twitter Followers

I read all the time. When I don’t write.

When I write, I try to use Twitter to announce new stories.

A couple of years ago I read that one way to increase Twitter followers was to find a similar or interesting person and follow them. As you do, I was instructed to just leave an invitation for them, by tweeting “Thanks in advance for the follow.”

Some did. Some did not. Some said they would not have otherwise thought of it. Some chuckled. I never kept track of who did or did not. I never realized what a mortal sin this was to ask.

Unexpected response

I did this two nights ago and was met by an unexpected response that it was OK for me to follow this particular writer, but that she would not follow me. The way she put it seemed a bit condescending to me at the time, and I tweeted that *crickets* would have been a more polite response.

An angry group of this writer’s friends came to her defense and soon became a bit frenzied. They brought my race and my gender and whatever else they could think of into the fray.
