When a writer sells a story, sometimes the storyteller gets enough readers to actually make some money with it, or even finds a reader who follows him or her. If your writing is but an outline or a slide presentation, the reader possibly won’t be impressed, although they may still receive your information.
Include a bit of your personality or writing voice, and the reader not only receives the information, but a little bit of you, too.
This combination can come more in the form of a story than a lecture.
Story telling is king.
I learned this lesson when I was quite young. I was ten tears old, third grade in Woodmore Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tn.
I forget exactly which magazine it was, where in the back pages, was an ad for Wallace Brown Greeting Cards. I thought if my folks would let me, this might work out well. I imagined such a simple world, that I could sell these things just by checking with the neighbors on the block.
Besides, there was a dark green Indian bike I really wanted and I didn’t even know what money was, much less how much I needed to buy the bike.
But I was right about one thing. I couldn’t seem to memorize the history of the Wallace Brown Company to tell prospects, but I could tell them my own story, that I was ten years old from Woodmore Elementary, and I really needed money. even though the lady of the house could buy the cards in the mail, they seem to feel more compelled to purchase after hearing my own story.
I walked to each door up my side street, and around around the next street. I returned home loaded with orders. I was convinced.
thanks for reading!
