It’s what you do with the niche, not the niche itself.
When I was starting to write on Medium, I was told several things in all the reading and exploring I did in the beginning.
“You must pick a niche,” they all said.
“Niche down and specialize, to get more involved readers.”
“Niche up, to have a larger universe of readers.”
“Niche down, for long-tail keywords, to help rank you higher.”
“Niche up to help you, the writer, avoid boredom and burnout.”
“Be consistent in your niche, so people will know what to expect from you and when.”
Learn what niche people are reading, and go there to make money.”
Newsflash — niches aren’t all they are cracked up to be.
There are only three things you can do with your niche.
1. There is information everywhere. You probably hold no patents on any of it. You can assemble the info on your niche in one easy place. Make a list or a graph.
2. You can tell us your take on it. What do you think about the info on your niche? You can present it in your style and voice. If people have come to like the way you write, that is perfect. They may hear more of the info from you than from someone else… or lastly,
3. You can tell us about your experience and true results using the info.
Of course, you probably do all three if you want, but that is the extent of it.
If you know of other things that make a niche valuable, please let me know.
Thanks for reading!
