How Writing Can Hi-Jack Your Life

Quietly, while you aren’t looking.

When I like something and start a project, I give it all. I go all the way before I can talk myself out of something. That’s how I accomplish any start-up.

And, I admit, many of you guys know how much I like shiny things, too.

The rediscovery of writing
For me, the rediscovery of writing in my life was distracting. The discovery that I could make money at it was more than distracting.

The money at the end of that rainbow can be incredible. For some it is. For others, it is a long arc to travel first. It can be a lengthy risk-reward cycle.

For me, if one or two stories a month were good, one or two stories a week would be even better. One or two a day would be over the moon. But it could be done.

Along with writing comes the promotion thereof, as in social media. Many social media.

Another shiny thing.

It was told to me, that a long time ago, while Thomas Edison’s job was inventing the incandescent light bulb, he would rise an hour early in the mornings, turn on his bedside lamp and spend that hour pursuing his hobby of writing. Dedication.

A lot of time
But writing can take a lot of time if you love it and are undisciplined about it. Social media can start small and grow like a runaway train until it removes any of your remaining time.

My point is, that this process can be slow or it can be fast. If you are a writer or even a writer at heart, don’t be too quick to play the psychological “name it and claim it” game, calling yourself a writer to the exclusion of your current occupation. You still need to put in that time and work that you did before you were a “writer.”

Where I am from they say you need to “dance with the one who brung you.”

Cal Newton says “Start small, but start immediately.” To which I must add, “and still don’t forget the bread is not going to put itself on the table.”

I wrote this story for myself, but thanks if you took your time and read it, too.
