How Do I Find My Particular Writing Style? New Writer Questions #3

How do I find my writing voice or style?

Finding your writing voice and style takes time and practice. You can start by experimenting with different styles and techniques, taking note of what works best for you, and incorporating your personal experiences, observations, and opinions into your writing.

I was fortunate in that respect.

I had been writing since before I knew it was a “thing” that I needed to learn. In my school, it was taught almost automatically as a part of English class.

Then later in life, some of my jobs did involve some writing. Even though it may have been technical writing, it was communication nonetheless.

When I did decide to write for the sake of writing, it was as natural a communication as conversation.

I had my style and writing voice already determined by that point. It’s like peoples’ accents. They are more difficult to change than to acquire. The trick is but to communicate and write. Do it enough, and the style will come to you gradually. I know that sounds like a cop-out, but I really believe it’s the only way it can happen. There is no Youtube instructional video that I know of.

It’s also helpful to read widely and study the works of authors you admire to gain inspiration and insights into different writing styles.

We tend to emulate that which we like.

in fact, you might say, all animals are emulators, firstly of their parents and then their peers, to some extent. So expose yourself to other writers. Reading them will teach you more than any course or video.
