Yes, she did it again.
My wife, PJ, did it again last evening.
She took a bit of this and a handful of that, and created the most magnificent dish I have enjoyed in a long time!
It actually consisted of, among many other things, lots of cheese, ripe olives, hamburger, spices, onions, tomatoes, taco shells and guacamole. Wow. What a treat to smell baking and a treat to consume!
By now you probably know I could not help but at least share some pictures of it with you. A distant perspective moves closer as I snap until I had to stop photographing entirely, and stuff myself.
And yes, I do realize that in the third picture, the guacamole took on the shape and appearance of cake icing due to the container it was in. And yes, I do realize that this has vey little to do with writing so far, save that even writers must maintain their strength for their task at hand.
I am getting pretty hungry at this point just looking at these photos, but I have to change topics, and mention that there is more going on with writing,
There is life. There is heat outside. It is, of course, July in Nashville. Google it.
Outside the dining room window (yes, again with the eating…) are cannas blooming profusely.
All that being said, I come to the reason for having certain difficulties in writing.
We now have four very small grandchildren, some of whom think their Gramps is “silly,” a notion requiring some self-defense on my part. The garden is overgrown. We are confined to quarantine at home. All of our neighbors have suddenly and very recently discovered power tools. Two-stroke power.
All the noise and activity may be having an effect on my writing.
Therefore, number one on my “to-do” list is to resurrect my use of “to-do” lists. Ah… refreshing whiffs of organization!
No matter what form, lists, calendars, appointment books, or journals, they are capable of bring you (me) a fresh breeze of accomplishment.
I am trying to work in all my duties from specific exercises to writing goals and production goals. Word count, number of articles, sit-ups, books, steps walking, almost everything can be counted or in some way quantified.
If it can be quantified, it can be measured. If something can be measured, it can be judged. It can be compared. It can be built into a goal equation.
Most goals, even if they are not something concrete, are generally achieved after a certain number of concrete steps. Step 1 – calculate how many concrete steps are required for success. Step 2 – do them.
Judge your equation and tweak, if necessary. Rinse and repeat. Not tough.
If I know how many words I can write in an hour, and I know I can make myself write an hour every day, I can tell you, pretty closely, the date the first draft of my book will be finished.
The only thing to work out now is how to make the hour of writing happen every day.
Anyway, thanks for listening/reading, but I’ve got to go now. I am starving!
